Spinning with a Drop Spindle (The
Basics) with Anita 1-3pm Saturday
The
handspindle may
seem a primitive tool, but before the spinning wheel (late 13th century
or so in Europe)... every thread for weaving, every yarn for
knitting or nalbinding, every sewing or embroidery thread... was made
on a handspindle! Nearly every child learned to spin, so you can too,
with just a little practice. We'll do some hands-on wool spinning with
this simplest of tools, after a brief overview. Bring a handspindle if
you have one. There will be simple drop spindles available for a few
dollars. This class is intended for the never-evers or those who have
tried spinning just a time or two. Ages: teens and up. Size Limit: 6
persons. |
Spinning with a HandSpindle -
Continuing to Spin Merrily Along 4-5pm Saturday
If
you've
done a little spinning on a drop spindle - maybe a lot! - and would
like to improve your skills, maybe branch out to different fibers or
different spindle types, come join us! We'll look briefly at the
variety of drop and supported spindles available across places and time
periods, and the basics of preparing the "big four" natural fibers:
wool, linen, silk, cotton, and try samples of each. A variety of wools,
representing a cross-section of the many fleece types, will be
examined. Bring a handspindle if you have one, especially if you're
having some trouble with it. There will be simple drop and supported
spindles available for a few dollars. Ages: teens and up. Size Limit: 6
persons. |
Bow-making
with Marcus the Bowyer
10-11
and
4-5 Saturday
This class will be presented in two parts in order to allow students to
begin their bows in the morning session, to work on it over the course
of the day, and to finish it in the second session. |
